An elderly man, who served in the military, was arrested on charges of raping and molesting a young girl.
Lewisburg police took Virgil Perry, 78, into custody last week after the victim’s mother contacted them. Perry lives on a quiet street in Lewisburg, mostly filled with retired couples.
“He was a good neighbor to us, we thought. Guess we didn’t know,” said neighbor Susan Hayes.
Susan and Gerald Hayes live next door to Perry and they could not believe their neighbor’s home is at the center of criminal sexual allegations with a young girl.
Gerald Hayes said, “I never would have expected it. Old, man, half-crippled, can barely get around.”
Yet, Lewisburg police are investigating Perry on charges of rape, gross sexual imposition and disseminating matter harmful to a minor. Police said the investigation started last week when the victim’s mother called them, worried about her 10-year-old daughter.
Residents tell us that Perry was a decorated military veteran and a respected member of the Lewisburg community.
Now, if he is convicted, Perry faces the possibility of spending his remaining years behind bars.
Perry was arrested last week, but has since posted 10 percent of a $75,000 bond. He will face a Grand Jury on Sept. 7.
