Coast Guardsman Accused of Possession of Child Porn

An active duty Coast Guard member accused of having more than 100 images and 17 full length child porn movies learned Friday he’ll be staying in jail for the time being.

25 year old Petty Officer 3rd Class John David Cadenas has been temporarily stationed here in Corpus Christi.

According to Friday’s court testimony, during a December interview with an Immigration Customs Enforcement Agent, Cadenas said child pornography peaked a ‘dark interest’ in him, and he would pay for entry into illegal websites utilizing his PayPal account

The ICE special agent in charge of the investigation testified that he believed Cadenas to be a threat to public safety because in his experience people who view images of child pornography typically progress from just viewing to molesting children.

His attorney argued Cadenas has never been in trouble with the law before, and that if released he could live with his mother and father just northwest of Austin commuting to Corpus Christi for work.

But, United States Magistrate Judge B. Janice Ellington denied Cadenas request for bond. She said that it was telling that he never looked for help once he was notified of the allegations.

There was testimony of how the Coast Guard froze Cadenas’ access to the Internet after learning of the child pornography allegations. Yet, according to his unit commander he later broke the rule by using a co-workers account. Judge Ellington said if he previously violated the computer rules to get what he needed, he wouldn’t be a good candidate to follow the bond requirements.

Cadenas has a three year old child, and there was concern raised in court that he might have progressed from looking at child porn to molesting his daughter. Christy and Denise attended Friday’s court hearing to offer moral support for their friend, Cadenas’ X-wife. They tell 3 news, it doesn’t appear the young girl was sexually assaulted.

“The baby was checked out, she’s been seeing a psychologist so they do not think that there was any physical contact,” says Christy. “The whole family, they’re just relieved he’s not going to be able to get out anytime soon at least.”

Cadenas is still considered an active member of the coast guard, but because he’s incarcerated he’s classified as unauthorized absent, essentially AWOL.

No decision on his future with the Coast Guard has been made.
